Herold
Herold - Herold is
located on Birch River in Braxton County about 9.7 miles above where Birch
empties into the Elk. It was established as a post office in 1891 by George A.
Herold, a native of Nicholas County, who later represented Webster County in
the West Virginia Legislature. Louis Johnson came to Herold in 1894 to work for
George Herold. He was appointed postmaster in 1906 and served in that capacity
until 1940, thus becoming Herold's best known resident. Herold is the last
settlement found on Birch River on its journey through Webster, Nicholas and
Braxton counties. |
