West Virginia Author

Skip Johnson is a native of Herold, in Braxton County, West Virginia, where he now lives. He retired in late 1992 as outdoor columnist for The Charleston Gazette and Sunday Gazette-Mail after more than three decades of writing the "Woods and Waters" column. Skip is a Korean War veteran.

He has authored three previous books: "The Braxton Connection" in 1986 (a collection of columns), "The Quicker the Sooner" in 1990 (about the career of photographer Ferrell Friend) and "Woods & Waters" in 1993 (a collection of outdoor stories from West Virginia and beyond).

His forthcoming book, "River on the Rocks - The Birch River Story", is scheduled for publication in the Fall of 2001( it was released in September 2001). The book will contain the history and legends of the river corridor from its source to mouth as well as bringing out detail of the natural beauty found on Birch, particularly in the rocky middle section of the stream.

The book is projected to be 400 pages long and contain 22 chapters. These chapters will be accompanied by 12 color pictures inside the book as well as a color dust jacket. There will also be a liberal use of black and white photos throughout.

A 17 x 24 inch map that outlines the entire Birch River watershed will be inserted into each book . This map will detail points of interest along the entire stream.

The chapters will include such topics as the "twin cities" of Skyles and Boggs located on upper Birch, the history of logging along the river, the historic Cora Brown House, the well-known Blue Hole and Devils' Backbone areas, the flora and fauna of Birch River, the Indians in central West Virginia, the historic floods, the mammoth rocks of Birch in its middle section and many other interesting stories about this scenic area of West Virginia.

Branching out from the immediate Birch area, the book will also present the most detailed accounts ever written of the legend of Strange Creek and the Henry Young saga of Powell's Mountain.
